Dr Liv Thorstensson Dávila is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Policy, Organization and Leadership at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her scholarship has addressed ideological and interactional perspectives on the education of multilingual immigrant and refugee students and their teachers in urban and micro-urban centers in the U.S. and Sweden. This 90-minute presentation will focus on strategies for scaffolding English language learning within multicultural Early Childhood classrooms. It will begin with an orientation to the notion of language as human action embedded in social relationships, followed by an overview of recent theoretical developments within the field of educational linguistics, including translanguaging, or the use of learners’ and teachers’ multiple linguistic repertoires to scaffold new learning (e.g., García & Wei, 2014).
