Public seminar on “Prevention of Osteoporosis – the Life Course Approach”.

The Hong Kong Chapter of Pacific Early Childhood Education Research Association (PECERA) organized a seminar on “Prevention of Osteoporosis – the Life Course Approach” on Oct 24, 2011. Osteoporotic fracture is becoming a major public health problem in Hong Kong, and Osteoporosis or “porous bone” is the most important risk factor. Established risk factors for osteoporosis include advanced age, genetics, menopause, low body weight, diet and other lifestyle factors.

Our Guest Speaker was Professor Suzanne Ho, who is the Emeritus Professor of the School of Public Health and the Founding Director of Centre of Research and Promotion of Women’s Health in CUHK. Professor Ho’s major research interests are in women’s health, aging, nutritional epidemiology, particularly osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, breast cancer risks in women and the health effects of soy. Professor Ho explained to us about osteoporosis and shared with us about the modifiable factors through the life course that help lower the risks for the development of osteoporosis and related fractures.
